The Children Are The Future

Chess & Community Conference, Inc. announces its inaugural chess tournament and community conference to be held January 12, 2013 at Mahler Auditorium in the UGA Center for Continuing Education on Lumpkin Street in Athens.
This all-day event begins at 9:00 a.m. and features a morning keynote address by James M. Bailey, CEO of Operation Hope in Atlanta.  Other highlights of the morning session include the presentation of three $1000 scholarship-winning essays by Athens area high school students on how to improve our community.  Athens Mayor Nancy Denson will present the scholarships.   A panel discussion will follow in which leaders, educators and students will discuss issues presented in the students’ essays.Image
During the afternoon session beginning at 1:00, the audience will enjoy thought-provoking poetry from HBO DEF Poet Abyss and Athens’ own Life the Griot, while witnessing the championship finals of the CCC student chess tournament. Sixteen teams will compete for a $1000 grand prize.
The event is free.  The public is encouraged to come, learn and enjoy.
